Does Armwrestling Need More Drama?
It has been a few weeks since East vs West Challenger Series concluded in Florida, and what a show it was! No less thanks to some of the big names that were on the card, including the currently most-viewed video of the card, IFBB Pro bodybuilder James English vs Auden Larratt.
This was, of course, also the most controversial match of the night, and the views surrounding this match have been extremely divisive online.

    Here is the problem.The Larretts have a huge following of fanboys so they bring in the pay-per-view. That is why they get privileges the rest don’t. That is why they get the silly circus show matches because they can dictate what they want because they bring in the money. Unfortunately, it’s destroying the sport but yet Larretts making a fortune on destroying the sport. It’s not even really armwrestling anymore. It’s about who can cheat more and who can run to the strap. You don’t even have to have the strongest hand anymore you could cheat and run to the strap. That is why you’ll never see Devon in a WAF match because he won’t be able to get away with any of that stuff. Imagine someone in a WAF match yelling and screaming at refs or a wife doing it too. That would never happen. They would be disqualified. Devon would not be top 10 without the cheating and rising before go.

    In my opinion, if the reason for armwrestling to gain popularity will be the "freak fights", that's where the sport will inevitably have to go. If the viewers are attracted by that kind of content, they won't be interested in an "olympic" approach to armwrestling. As always, the compromise is somewhere in the middle, with mostly serious competition plus a match or two between various kinds of personalities to drive up the engagement/ppv sales

    People like to say Devon is great for the sport because of all the attention he brings but I wonder how true that is. How many of his views are from people who are already interested in armwrestling vs outsiders being introduced to the sport? I think armwrestling needs more legitimacy in order to appeal to a wider audience and matches like James vs Auden just make the sport seem like a circus. It may be entertaining to people who are already fans and know the athletes involved but I highly doubt it's attracting outsiders. Personalities and drama are one thing, I'm talking about the 10 minutes of set up, arguing with the refs, false starts, etc.

    • @EastsideArmWrestling

      I think you brought up a good point. We need new active fans of the sport, not just those who come watch for 1 match because of hype or drama. I think there's a huge participation aspect to this.

      Devon's views are 100% from a lot of outsiders cuz I am a new fan of armwrestling and Devon/The Whisperer/Schoolboy is the only armwrestler that even has a chance of being recommended by UA-cam algorithm. For me personally I first saw Whisperer on tik tok but didnt become a fan then i saw Devon vs Georgi. The first time i saw Devon tho was Whisperer vs Devon and I thought this guy has to be like the best arm wrestler in the world cuz I see on tik tok The Whisperer toying with people and then just see this dude with a bunch of grey hairs stonewall him without breaking a sweat. Then I saw Devon vs Hafthor cuz i was a fan of strongman and it made me realize how strong these arm wrestlers really are + how much technique goes into it cuz he was stonewalling halfthor. Then Finally watched my first full match which was Devon vs Georgi and worked backwards from there to find Devons run in 2023 and then like I said from my experience currently I havent even seen Devon struggle yet. So I found a vid that was like top 10 strongest arm wrestlers and saw Devon at #2 and Levan at 1 and thats how I got interested into the Devon vs Levan match and just going backwards from there. Watching Devon in his WAL days, watching MMT in WAL, watching Dave Chaffee then finding out about people like John Brzenk, Denis Cyplenkov, Richard Lupkes, Travis etc. I imagine a lot of people share the same sort of trajectory as me tho with Devon being their gateway. (To further prove this just search "arm wrestling" on youtube and literally all you see is Devon)

    Athletes must do a better job of self promotion if they want more eyeballs on their matches. The sport itself may be boring for some but viewers will become more invested if they know about the characters. Much like strongman and crossfit do. I am for the most part a purist and use the sport as a way of challenging myself. If we "need" to fabricate drama to get more views on this sport then that will be sad.

    It's 100% promoters' "fault" (if we consider that making looser rules is a fault). The referee that got a lot of hate on Auden match is a WAF referee, he knows how to enforce strict rules, but the organizers of EvW explicitly made looser rules for entertainment. He simply followed them

    Drama can be great for growing the sport, but I don't see controversy like the auden match actually bringing in viewers. Rather, it managed to piss off a large amount of arm wrestling viewers and I can't imagine any new viewers would find that match entertaining at all. There seriously needs to be some rules introduced which allow refs to give fouls for the type of ridiculous behaviour auden displayed

    • @EastsideArmWrestling
      @EastsideArmWrestling 2 дні тому

      Yes, yes, concur. Drama to draw in views is great! But drama that turns people off or turns the sport into a joke is bad. There needs to be a line drawn between the two.
